Structured Literacy in Prep to Year 6
At Musgrave State School, every Prep to Year 6 classroom participates in a dedicated daily Structured Literacy block, providing students with explicit, systematic, and evidence-based reading instruction aligned with the Science of Reading.
Our literacy block is underpinned by the evidence-based research and incorporates all key components of an effective reading lesson. Students engage in phonological and phonemic awareness, explicit phonics instruction, fluency practice, vocabulary development, oral language opportunities, reading comprehension, and written expression. These components work together to develop the foundational skills necessary for successful reading and writing.
A strong focus is placed on daily review and retrieval practice, allowing students to revisit and consolidate previously taught concepts, build automaticity, and strengthen long-term retention of literacy knowledge and skills. Teachers use ongoing assessment and targeted instruction to ensure all students receive the support and challenge they need to make progress.
Through consistent, high-quality literacy instruction across every classroom, Musgrave State School is committed to ensuring all students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required for literacy success. Guided by our school motto, "Every child leaving Musgrave a competent and confident reader," we strive to create strong foundations that empower every learner to become a capable, enthusiastic and lifelong reader.
